Two Popular Charleston Hotels from a Charleston Local

Many hotels in downtown Charleston, South Carolina are nothing short of dreamy and sophisticated. I have had the privilege of being hosted in several, and can tell you for a fact that The Charleston Place, and Hotel Bennett are luxury redefined. Each and every Charleston hotel has its own charm, and personality. So it may be challenging to choose the right place for you and your family.

My family was hosted at The Charleston Place and Hotel Bennett in December of 2023. So, the weather was cooler, Christmas decorations were up, and holiday events were taking place. Costs, food and other activities may differ from season to season so always check online for current prices, menus, offerings and activities.

So let’s talk about The Charleston Place (pictures above). We were invited to stay at this 5 star hotel in December of 2023. The decorations were up, and the “snow” was falling each night in the courtyard, which we had a great view of from our room! The lobby is stunning year round. With the staircase, chandelier, and live music playing, you see right away that your visit is going to be special.

Location : Located at 205 Meeting Street, Downtown Charleston makes this easily walkable to the Charleston Market, shopping, and other off-site dining options.

Rooms: There are around 434 rooms total. The standard room size, according to Travel US News is 400 square feet. Alongside these lovely room options, they also offer one and two bedroom suites. Check online for all of the room and suite options offered here.

Cleanliness: This place is clean, comfortable and beautiful. As my teenager would say, the “aesthetic” is divine.

Staff: Friendly, and helpful. From the people at the front desk, to the valet, to the room service, you will not miss out on that Southern charm and friendly faces.

Family Friendly: This hotel is fancy, yet family friendly. They host multiple family friendly events throughout the year, with children in mind. The balance between luxury and comfort is perfect here. I wonder how they do it? It’s perfection.

Pet friendly: Pets are welcomed to stay here, but are not allowed in dining areas or left unattended in the guest rooms. Ask the concierge for pet sitting options!

Dining: Several Dining Options on site to choose from, as well as wonderful in-room service. (If you can swing it, try the room service for breakfast. The coffee is SO good.) Restaurants on site include The Charleston Grill (classic Charleston food), The Palmetto Cafe (Lowcountry classics to French-inspired dishes), the Thoroughbred Club (drinks, desserts and live music) and Meeting at Market (classic pub vibes where you can watch your favorite team on the big screen).

Amenities: There is a rooftop saltwater pool, workout facilities, sauna, jacuzzi, pool bar, and relaxation rooms. There are shops located on the main floor of the hotel. The Charleston Place offers a Club Level with a two story lounge, complimentary beverages, luxury rooms and more. They offer free bike rentals for all guests so you can easily get around downtown. Oh and if you need a facial, massage or nails treated, book an appointment at the Spa here. They even offer two spa treatments for children 12 and under! Needless to say, the amenities are on point.

Parking: The hotel itself only offers valet parking at $52/night. However, there is a parking garage directly next to the hotel.

Cost: If you are looking for a cheap, budget friendly place to stay, this is not it. But the offerings here really are wonderful for the price. And since the location allows you to walk to most places, you will save in other ways such as gas and parking.

Enjoying room service and coffee at The Charleston Place

Next up is Hotel Bennett. From the moment we pulled up to the hotel, and saw the valet come out in his coat with tails, we knew this was going to be an experience. My kids told us we “didn’t belong here” and I told them that we were going to pretend like we did, and enjoy every second. And we did.

Being a 5 star boutique hotel, Hotel Bennett is all about luxury. It may be better suited for a couple’s vacation or one with older children or teenagers in tow. The room we stayed in here was quite large, and the bathroom was huge. There were less guests staying here at the time we went (in between Thanksgiving and Christmas), which made it nice and quiet. We were given access to the King’s Club, which is a private area full of games, drinks, and meals. When we were staying here, the weather was chilly but if we had been staying here in warmer months, we would have enjoyed the outdoor terrace at the club. Instead, we enjoyed the fireplace inside instead.

Location: Located at 404 King Street, this is the perfect place to stay for all the dining and shopping in Downtown Charleston.

Rooms: There are around 179 rooms total. The standard room size, according to Travel US News is 355 square feet. Alongside their many room options, they also offer one and two bedroom suites, some with private seating areas and even private terraces. Check out all of the options online.

Cleanliness: This place is sparkling. No worries about being clean. Take a bath and enjoy yourself.

Staff: The staff at the front desk is so helpful! Make sure to ask them for any advice on where to eat, or what to do.

Family Friendly: It is family friendly, and they do host events for families throughout the year. Especially at Christmastime, don’t miss their gingerbread house in the lobby and hot chocolate!

Pet Friendly: Dogs are allowed in guest rooms but not in public spaces. They may dine with you if you are seated outdoors. Only two dogs per room, and they must at or under 25 lbs. An additional $200 cleaning fee will be charged to your room.

Dining: Wonderful dining options on site such as Gabrielle (elegant dining spot), Fiat Lux (rooftop dining & bar), Camellias (drinks, charcuterie, seafood, and desserts), and La Patisserie (Parisian cafe).

Amenities: This hotel has something for everyone. The (heated) rooftop pool is a great place to relax, take the kids for a swim or enjoy a cocktail with a view. You can even rent a cabana while you’re here. If you need a massage or a facial, book an appointment with the Spa at Hotel Bennett . And the fitness room is here so you don’t have to worry about all the delicious food you will enjoy. There is even a boutique on the premises with clothing, jewelry, and gifts. And of course, they offer the King’s Club level access if you want even more privacy, dining options, or concierge to help plan your stay in the Holy City.

Parking: The hotel offers valet parking for $47/overnight or $18/day with complimentary in and out access all day in case you need your vehicle. For oversized vehicles, there is the Charleston Visitor’s Center Parking Garage located at 63 Mary Street (8 minute walk to Hotel Bennett).

Cost: I am going to be real with you. This is not easy on the pocket book, but if you want to be spoiled and enjoy a gorgeous hotel, this is definitely the place to splurge. Spoil yourself or someone you love with a staycation here! They will never forget it. Trust me on this.

What can I say? Both of these hotels are worth all the hype. Their hospitality, amenities, locations and luxury are unsurpassed. Truly two of the nicest places we have ever stayed as a family.

A Brief Thanksgiving Message

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! Whether you are with family, extended family, alone or at work, I wish you many blessings today. The God of the universe sees you and cares about you. Yes, you.

The past year or two have been hard. And that’s an understatement. So give grace today…for yourself, and your loved ones.

If you don’t make the mashed potatoes with lumps, or into the tots like they want, it’s okay. Remember what is truly important today. (I am preaching to myself.).

If you need an inhale/exhale exercise, here you go. We all may need this today, right? It is from Psalm 107:1:

Inhale: Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,

Exhale: for his steadfast love endures forever!

God Bless you all and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

George Washington’s visit to St. Michael’s Church in Charleston

“Our butts are sitting where George Washington’s butt sat?” my son asked me in this holy and reverent place.

“Yes! Isn’t that amazing?” was how I responded. Because why not? It is incredible, right?

I was so overwhelmed being in St. Michael’s Church in downtown Charleston, SC today. I have taken pictures of the outside of this beautiful place several times before, but never stepped foot inside. I had no idea they let people go inside it to view the beauty and history of it all until recently. So when we were downtown today, I was determined to take my children in here and find pew 43. Pew 43 is where President George Washington sat for worship when he visited the Holy City many years ago. Later, another famous man would sit in the same pew, a man by the name of Robert E. Lee.

This church just happens to be one the oldest surviving church structures in Charleston. Its first service dates back to 1761! Is your jaw dropping yet? Mine was! I just stood in the church sanctuary in awe. I opened the little door to pew 43 and sat inside it with my children. This was surreal for all of us. The stained glass windows in here are absolutely gorgeous, by the way. I never would have known how old this church was if history didn’t tell me. It’s breathtaking. Taking it all in, seeing this massive wooden door to step back out into the reality of the hustle and bustle of Meeting Street was so… unreal. I told my husband I was overwhelmed with the history and stories this church held. History can do that to us. If this made me amazed, I cannot imagine what visiting the Holy Land would do to me. Walking where Jesus once walked just seems too wonderful.

St. Michael’s cemetery holds wonderful people of the past, including some of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Normally, my son wouldn’t want to go into a cemetery, but it was during the day, and I gave him a task to find some important names for me: Pinckney and Rutledge. (There are several more famous people buried here as well.) This made it like a treasure hunt for my son and it was easier for him to be here without having a lot of fear or sadness. My daughter on the other hand, finds old cemeteries fascinating and wants to go on a haunted Charleston tour with us. Funny how your own kids can be so completely opposite in some ways.

Charleston is called the Holy City for many reasons. One of them being that you can see over 400 church steeples in downtown alone! And its churches do not disappoint. They hold such amazing history and the fact that we can walk in freely and sit where these iconic men of history have once sat still amazes me. It is definitely something I would recommend doing when you make a visit to Charleston. It is absolutely free to walk inside and you leave with such a great feeling of awe and gratitude. At least I did.

Charleston endured an earthquake in 1886, and a tornado in 1938. The church suffered some damage but was repaired and still stands. I find it amazing how this church, with a massive steeple of 186 feet tall, and its bells and clock imported from England in 1764 are all still here. Are you ready to go back in time? Even on a rainy day, it’s beautiful. Plan that trip to Charleston already!

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens is a MUST VISIT

Have you ever been somewhere so beautiful it’s made you cry? We finally visited a place in our new hometown that may be one of the most gorgeous places I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen some European countries. I’ve been to Hawaii. I’ve been very blessed in my lifetime to go and see places I’ve only read about in textbooks. But several months ago, we went to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, SC and I was in awe. Literally taking pictures at every corner. The entire place is so picturesque. Weddings were happening, people from all over the world were here. And a deer licked my arm. More on that in a minute. But seriously. This place was from a story book.

My cousin had been in town for a few days and we wanted to take her around the Charleston area for some sight seeing. After some time at the pool we decided to head over to Magnolia Plantation to check it out. I enticed my children to go by mentioning the nature center. And it did NOT disappoint. I had no idea I would walk into this little animal area and feel like Snow White. There are eight deer in there that just roam the area, waiting for people to pet them. They WILL lick you if you let them. I totally did. What other time in my life will I ever be able to say I’ve been licked by a deer? These deer were taken in because they had imprinted on humans and couldn’t return to the wild. So they are nice and safe here and can roam around to the surprise and delight of anyone who enters this area. We were also fascinated by the peacocks. They also roam the area and show off their feathers for the ladies. The only other place I’ve seen peacocks in the wild was in Hawaii. I forgot how loud they are! Haha! But definitely check out the nature center. There are several amazing animals to see!

The landscape of the area is insanely gorgeous. There is simply NOT a bad place to take a picture. Every corner has some sort of flower, tree or wildlife you will want to capture on your phone to create a future canvas print later. Trust me on this. Honestly, I was kind of pinching myself the entire time, making sure this was a real place. And being a short drive from my home made it that much more amazing to me.

So if you keep your ticket and want to return within seven days, you can go again at no extra cost. So, we kept our tickets and took my husband back with us because he HAD to see this place! This time when we went we saw several alligators in some of the ponds. Magnolia has strict rules about not feeding them but they allow them to roam and live here freely. You are in South Carolina. They live here! So watch where you walk! You may see one a tad closer than you expected! (The one pictured below is a little guy in the nature center.)

I love seeing new places, and learning about their history. This place isn’t just pretty. It is historic. It was founded in 1676 by the Drayton family. It has seen its fair share of the Revolutionary War, and Civil Wars. It is the oldest public garden in America and it is a MUST SEE when coming to Charleston.

Our family just bought the general admission tickets which gives you access to the gardens, grounds, and the nature center. You will need to pay extra to go inside the home, take a tram or boat tour or see the swamp gardens. SO much to do and see here so definitely plan accordingly. If you go to their website, they will tell you what is in bloom right now, and lots of other details you may need before you visit. Check it out here: https://www.magnoliaplantation.com/index.html

Walking these grounds gave me such peace. Being in nature will do that. I look at these birds wandering the grounds and the deer who have no idea that licking people isn’t normal and it reminds me of this verse:

Matthew 6: 26-34 says, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Next time you plan a visit to Charleston, check out these gorgeous gardens. I promise you will not be disappointed. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is most definitely a place you MUST VISIT! (Please remember it is hot in the summer! Haha!)
